Aavik R-x88 Series

Phono Preamplifiers for MC and Optical Pickups

With the new Aavik R-x88 series, Audio Group Denmark introduces new phono preamplifiers for moving-coil (MC) and optical cartridges.

Danish manufacturer Aavik expands its portfolio of high-end phono preamplifiers with the new R-x88 series. According to the company, the R-188, R-288, and R-588 models are designed to deliver analog playback at reference level. They are aimed at discerning vinyl enthusiasts who use both moving-coil and optical cartridges—such as those from DS Audio. From a technical standpoint, the new series is based on the former reference model R-880, but is intended to make its core technologies accessible to a wider audience.

Aavik states that special emphasis was placed on achieving the most uncolored, low-noise signal path possible during the development of the R-x88 series. The goal is to preserve every musical nuance of the original recording. All three models follow this design philosophy, but differ in technical complexity and feature set. The units are manufactured in Denmark and, according to the company, are hand-assembled by experienced technicians in Aalborg. Aavik relies on a combination of in-house production and collaboration with selected Danish and international partners.

A key feature of the R-x88 series is its comprehensive noise-reduction concept. Technologies employed include integrated Ansuz Active Tesla Coils, Square Tesla Coils, Analog Dither Circuits, and Anti-Aerial Resonance Coils. Together, these are intended to ensure an exceptionally low noise floor and high signal integrity. This is complemented by a resonance-mode-based power supply, in which specially developed DC/DC converters are said to generate clean, sinusoidal voltages with very low noise and minimal distortion.

Discrete RIAA Equalization

According to Aavik, the RIAA section of the phono preamplifiers is of fully discrete design. Ultra-low-noise bipolar transistors connected in parallel are said to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 94 dB at 1 kHz. The moving-coil input is topologically symmetrical and floating—that is, not connected to ground—which is intended to further reduce interference. In addition, all models offer precise adjustment options for gain and filtering, allowing optimal matching to a wide range of cartridges.

The flagship R-588 model goes a step further, according to the manufacturer. It integrates proprietary, discrete operational amplifiers and independent power supplies for individual circuit sections. This is said to result in higher resolution, increased dynamics, and improved transparency.

The enclosure design also plays an important role. Designed by Flemming Erik Rasmussen and Michael Børresen, the chassis combines wood, copper, and steel. This mix of materials is intended to provide resonance-damping properties and minimize vibrations that could degrade sound quality.
