Shanling SM1.3R HD adds 2K display and second-generation R2R DAC
Shanling has launched the SM1.3R HD, a network streamer, digital-to-analogue converter (DAC) and headphone amplifier featuring a 5.98-inch 2K display, second-generation R2R conversion technology and support for multiple streaming services. The device is available now, priced at $1,699 or £1,799.
Building on the existing SM1.3R, the new model combines an upgraded screen with Shanling’s proprietary Kunlun Pro R2R DAC architecture. The manufacturer has also retained the platform’s broad streaming capabilities and range of digital and analogue connections, allowing the unit to operate as part of a conventional hi-fi system or an active speaker setup.
2K display and upgraded R2R conversion
The SM1.3R HD features a 5.98-inch display with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels. The screen presents album artwork, playback information and system menus.
Audio conversion is handled by Shanling’s second-generation Kunlun Pro R2R architecture, developed in-house using technology from the company’s flagship SCD3.3 SACD player. The 24-bit design incorporates 212 precision resistors, each rated at 0.01% accuracy. Shanling describes the resulting sound character as natural and analogue-like.
Power is supplied by two 31W toroidal transformers, with separate power supplies for the digital and analogue sections. According to the manufacturer, this configuration is intended to support stable power delivery across the audio circuitry.
Streaming services and local music storage
The Android-based platform runs on a Rockchip processor, supported by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Network connectivity includes Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi 6.
Streaming options include Roon Ready, Tidal Connect and Qobuz Connect, alongside built-in access to Apple Music, Amazon Music and Spotify. This combination allows users to access supported streaming platforms directly through the device.
For locally stored music, the SM1.3R HD includes an internal M.2 SSD slot for expanding storage capacity. USB drive playback provides an additional way to access existing music collections.
Connectivity and headphone listening
The SM1.3R HD offers coaxial, optical and USB DAC inputs for connecting external digital sources, including computers and compatible CD transports. RCA and balanced XLR analogue outputs support integration with amplifiers and other hi-fi components.
Digital outputs also allow the device to function as a transport, sending digital audio to an external DAC. For personal listening, a dedicated headphone amplifier and front-mounted 6.35mm headphone output provide a direct connection for wired headphones.
The range of inputs and outputs gives the SM1.3R HD several potential roles within a home audio setup, from standalone streaming source to digital transport and headphone listening component.
