Compact Flagship Speaker

We’ve been eagerly anticipating Linn’s latest move for quite some time. At High End Vienna, we’d already had a conversation with a visibly excited Joe Rodger, who hinted at what he described as the company’s most significant new product in years. The only catch was that Linn’s brand manager wasn’t yet at liberty to tell us exactly what that product would be.

A few days ago, then, word reached us that following a preview presentation, dealers had reportedly snapped up every available unit from the Scottish manufacturer. Now Linn has finally lifted the veil. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the Linn 343.

In 2023, Linn caused quite a stir with the 360, a speaker that, available as a fully active version as an option, was the perfect playing partner for its DSM sources. Together, they from a sleek, modern system delivering world-class sonic performance. There was just one small caveat: although the 360 is guaranteed to knock the socks off anyone who hears it (we can testify to that), it’s simply too much speaker for many listeners and living spaces. So, over the past three years, the Scots have been hard at work distilling as much of the 360’s performance as they possibly could into a considerably smaller package.

That must have called for some serious ingenuity. At first glance, the 343 looks like a roughly waist-high “360 Junior,” its slender enclosure accommodating the “Array” driver assembly, comprising high- and midrange domes plus a lower-midrange cone, but leaving no room for the two 22-cm- woofers. The engineers did manage to fit one of them into the base of the cabinet in a down-firing configuration, while the second remains exclusive to the flagship 360. Linn placed particular emphasis on the fact that both the 19-cm-midbass driver and the 22-cm-woofer employ the company’s Pistonik design principle.

Their exceptionally long-throw motor systems incorporate engineering tricks such as an enlarged magnetic gap and a permanently magnetically saturated working environment for the moving parts, ensuring that the force acting on the voice coil remains precisely constant throughout its excursion. The result is highly linear signal reproduction, even at extreme excursions. Given that these moderately sized drivers are expected to deliver such substantial mechanical performance, it goes without saying that considerable development work has also gone into ventilation and heat dissipation.

The integration of the electronics into the cabinet is equally intriguing. In the 343, the entire electronic brain resides in a kind of subchassis, isolated from the rest of the enclosure by a three-point spring suspension.

This allows the electronics to operate entirely undisturbed by the internal pressure variations and vibrations within the cabinet. The passive cooling system, which relies on the chimney effect, is reminiscent of the approach used in Linn’s Klimax Solo 500 power amplifier. Cooling ribs on the inside of the hollow core of the triangular heatsink impart excess heat on the air inside, causing it to rise and thereby create airflow. The heated air then escapes the cabinet through vent openings at the top ot the enclosure.

As befits a high-end loudspeaker, a substantial portion of the 343’s development and manufacturing effort has gone into its cabinet construction. Like the 360, it uses a composite material that combines exceptional rigidity with an internal volume unusually generous for a speaker of this size. The rounded enclosure, too, takes its cue from its larger sibling, with every contour carefully optimized to minimize edge diffraction and help the loudspeaker disappear completely when the music begins.

The goal was not simply to put a smaller version of the 360 on spikes, but rather to create a loudspeaker that works in smaller rooms while still delivering a soundstage and scale commensurate with a much larger design.

The Linn 343 is available in the semi-active PWAB (Passive with Active Bass) configuration for €53,550, as well as in the fully active Exakt Integrated version for €77,350. Finish options include Clyde Built, Single Malt, Linn Heritage, Triton, high-gloss black, and Alpine white.

We don’t yet know just how close the Linn 343 comes to the performance of the 360, but as soon as the announcement landed, we were on the phone to secure a listening appointment with this little flagship. We’ll keep you up to date.
