Even though the Electrocompaniet AW 800 M can seamlessly trace its lineage all the way back to the legendary 2 Channel Audio Power Amplifier from 1973, the mighty power amplifier is by no means just old wine in new bottles: Originally conceived as a facelift of the now aged AW 600, the supposed enhancements quickly took on the character of a completely new development.
This doesn’t stop at the fact that this Juggernaut makes use of the latest production technologies such as SMDs and wave soldering, which enables a very compact amplification circuit; a completely new power supply circuit with HF filtering and DC blocker plus two powerful toroidal transformers, which are not only magnetically but also electrostatically shielded, ensure not only almost unlimited power, but above all impressively low noise. The result is classic EC sound signature in the best incarnation we’ve heard to date: On a downright gigantic soundstage, the AW 800 M presents the music with a fabulously effortless, organic flow.
