Audio Note (UK) is one of the few manufacturers to offer complete audio systems while placing a strong emphasis on sonic synergy between components. The OTO is a true classic. It has been part of the British company’s lineup since 1991 and is currently available in two versions: a line-level model and a phono-equipped version. Priced at around €5,000, it is also comparatively affordable for a hand-built and individually voiced Audio Note amplifier. Like many of its more exclusive siblings, it incorporates numerous proprietary components manufactured in-house at the company’s facility in Partridge Green, West Sussex.

Its appearance is understated, the build quality is excellent, and it offers four RCA inputs, including an RIAA/MM phono input, as well as a tape output. At first glance, its nine watts of output power may seem modest, but when paired with efficient loudspeakers, they are more than sufficient. And every single watt bears the unmistakable Audio Note signature. The OTO delivers a presentation that is remarkably dynamic, richly colorful, and spatially precise. If vinyl playback is a priority, its built-in MM phono stage ranks among the finest of its kind and quickly banished any thoughts we had of moving to an MC cartridge. During listening tests, the OTO impressed us with its sheer musicality and coherence, allowing us to rediscover recordings we thought we knew by heart. It also handles large-scale orchestral works with complete assurance. In short, despite its in-house “Level 1” designation, it performs far beyond its official rank, demonstrating just how capable a thoughtfully executed, minimalist tube integrated amplifier can be.
